Keith Pille's Weekly Shuffle
Every week, I will fire up the
Shuffle Songs option on my iPod; the first song to come up, no matter
what it is, will get an instant, unvarnished review. We're at the
mercy of random chance and the limits of my digital music collection.
Let's see where this takes us.
Rock N Roll Radio V2
Derailleur, The Cat's Meow
Well, this is embarassing. Derailleur
is my band... we've been recording for months, and I've got a bazillion
different mixdowns of various songs on my iPod so that I can evaluate
them and reevaluate them and agonize over which mix is exactly right
(that's why there's a V2 at the end... it's just the second mixdown,
not an attempt to sound like either a software release version or
a German rocket).
So I suppose it was just a matter of time
before one of them bubbled up in the shuffle. I feel a little silly,
trying to review my own band's music. But a deal's a deal, I promised
to say exactly what I think. So let's get on with a completely objective
review:
Fuck! These Derailleur motherfuckers can
really play! Jesus Christ! I have seen the future of rock and roll
and its name is Derailleur. Can you believe the pipes on that guy
singing? How about that fucking genius-level keyboard? Oh my god--
I'm so transported by the guitar that I think I just shit my pants.
Did I shit my pants? Lemme check. Yes. I did. The guitar made me
shit my pants. Well, it happens when you're dealing with otherworldly
genius. Those goddamned drums! Man. It sounds like they got rocked
so hard that they had to be stored in a lead vault afterwards. That's
how you show the drums who's boss. Shit! Fuck! Goddamn! I struck
gold! I struck it rich!
Let me put it this way: do you remember
your first kiss? The first time you had sex? The first time you
shot up with black tar heroin? That's this song, only with atomic
rainbows and nuclear unicorns.
(here's the song
in question, since it's not exactly widely available atthis point.
You may want to slip on some Depends before you give it a listen.
