Keith Pille's Weekly Shuffle
1.9.06

Every week, I will fire up the Shuffle Songs option on my iPod; the first song to come up, no matter what it is, will get an instant, unvarnished review. We're at the mercy of random chance and the limits of my digital music collection. Let's see where this takes us.

The Ride of the Valkyries
Richard Wagner, Der Ring des Nibelungen

I know, it's one of the songs you're most likely to see included in some Bestest Classical Hits of All Time compilation CD being hawked on low-budget TV. That's ok-- I make no pretense about knowing anything about Classical music (I hear that Salieri didn't like Mozart much). In this area, I'm a sad little dabbler, and I'm fine with that. I've got a handful of pieces that I love to listen to, and this is one of them (and if I can make a quick, serious point, I'd argue that this sort of cherry-picking in unfamiliar musical areas is one of the beauties of the digital music revolution; it's wonderful to
be able to check out isolated classical tracks without having to shell out a lot of money before knowing what I like).

Sometimes it makes me think of helicopters attacking a village. Sometimes it makes me think of Illinois Nazis.

Sometimes it makes me think of driving in my car with the song cranked, feeling like a total badass. That's because this is often what I'm doing when I go riding with the Valkyries.
