Last year, we ran a
story about
antique shops which made a passing reference to the ever-popular
painting theme of dogs playing poker. Last week, thanks to the power of
Google, a reader was drawn to that article and sent us the following email:
Paul [REDACTED] to editor
Hi, my name is Paul. My grandmother gave me this dogs in bar playing poker. She said "Now this is very old, maybe even older than me." What I am wondering from you if there is a way that I could find out what this wall fabric is and maybe even how much it's worth. So if you can give me any information or if you know someone who could help me, I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks Paul.
One of our long-standing goals here at the Nerd is to help anyone who actually takes the time to email us; we're also always looking for a way to kill some time. I did a bit of Googling and sent the following response:
Hi, Paul,
To be honest, I'm not sure how you could find that out. After getting your
email, I did some quick Internet work and did find out that Dog-Poker paintings
can go for a lot more than I ever would've thought... check out this
CNN article.
Do you have a picture of the painting? One thought that I did have
would be to post it and ask the American Nerd readership for ideas...
that's sort of a long shot, but it's possible that somebody knows
something.
At any rate, good luck, and thanks for reading the site.
Best,

Paul was game:
here is the snap for the fabric, it's not a picture. and it is 56"X 35" I can't find this one on the internet at all. so i don't know. but at any rate, here you go. thanks and if you can get anymore info i would appreciate it.
So here we go, loyal AmNerd readers: anyone know anything about dog-poker
tapestries in general and/or this one in particular? There's a dogs-playing-poker
painting with a pretty
similar picture entitled "A Friend in Need," but I don't know anything
about the Turkish tapestry side. If anyone has any sort of further dog-poker
tapestry info, please send it to me with "poker dogs" in the
subject line, and I'll pass the word on to Paul. Grrrrracias.
