It was a late show, but worth it. Doors opened at 8, so my
wife and I got down there about 7:20 to try and grab some
seats so she (and I) wouldn't have to stand. There was already
a line stretching down 7th St. past the Entry door by that
check cashing place! We still managed to snag a couple of
stools on the main level where they've refinished things (where
there used to be stairs going down to a long bar to the left
of the stage). We knew we wouldn't be able to see well there
but we could kneel on the stools if we really wanted to see.
It wasn't as good as his solo show at the Guthrie a few years
ago, but there were some surprises. Glen Kotche opened up
with some weird but cool percussion stuff and then played
a few songs during one of the encores. The big surprise was
when Tweedy's kid, Spencer, rocked the drums on "I'm
the Man Who Loves You" on the second(?) encore. He was
really awesome for what, an eight-year-old? And Kraig Johnson
got up and sang "Pecan Pie" and danced a little
(which my wife was quite pleased about). He played songs from
across the spectrum- "Gun" to "Passenger Side"
to "Spiders," but it seemed to lack a little adventure.
Plenty of good banter and good songs but there was some extra
ingredient missing that kept it just short of a great show.
