One Percent Press

One Percent Press is a Georgia-based small publisher run by Stephen Floyd and JP Coovert. They specialize in high-quality, low-cost comics, zines, shirts, posters, and they have even released a split EP featuring  Venice is Sinking and What We Do is Secret.

I’m most familiar with their comic output, and JP Coovert is responsible for the bulk of it. His work sometimes reminds me of John Porcellino and Anders Nilsen--not bad company--but Coovert, like any young artist, is slowly defining his own style. I’ve got the feeling that he’ll present some very impressive and unique work in the future.

If I had one complaint it would be that the stories in the comics just aren’t long enough. The design, art, and paper--generally earth-toned, nicely textured and recyled--get my highest praise, but it would be nice to see what Coovert can do with an extended narrative. It’s hard to complain, though, when the most expensive comic is three dollars--and you get freebies with your order.

One Percent Press is already distinguishing itself among other indie presses and with all of Floyd and Coovert's potential, it will be interesting to see where they go from here.
