I can't say I love the new name or XTREME new packaging,
but hot damn! It tastes good (especially the tangerine and
the white grape-- that grape jobby is sweet without being
cloying, with just a hint of bite) and, unlike most other
diet sodas, it doesn't hurt you. No caffeine (not that I'm
against caffeine, but there's a time and a place), no high
fructose corn syrup, and no aspartame to give you headaches
and rev the heart up to 100ish territory.
I suppose it'd be more accurate to say that Diet Rite doesn't
hurt you much; you're still dropping the pH of your mouth
for a while, giving your teeth an acid bath, and I wouldn't
be too shocked if we eventually hear that the Splenda sweetener
(which, if I understand things correctly, is just sugar with
a chlorine atom at the end of the chain, to impair absorption)
causes testicular rot or something.
But, for the time being, Diet Rite Pure Zero seems like good,
clean soda fun.
